Flickering Monitors

DocKtor Know recently had a customer contact him regarding a problem with flickering monitors. They stated that when someone stood up from their desk it would sometimes cause the monitors around them to flicker. This was obviously not ideal and they wanted to know if the Targus Universal Docking Stations (UDS) were causing the issue. Lots of things can cause monitors to flicker, from loose connections to RF interference, read more in this previous blog post. In order to better understand what was going on, we took a trip and observed the behavior ourselves. We were able to reproduce the issue and found several things that could have caused the behavior.

  • One user had a Bluetooth dongle plugged into a USB 3.0 port on the back of the docking station. Moving the dongle to a USB 2.0 port on the side of the docking station resolved the flickering issue he experienced.
  • We also found that monitors were connected to the Targus UDS via the HDMI to DVI adapter and the workstations were being used on height adjustable standing desks. Moving the desk up and down can cause the connections to become loose and result in flickering monitors.
  • Lastly, it's possible that they have a lot of electrical interference in their environment and energy could be getting in through the adapter and causing a brief interruption to the signal and ...flickering. We removed the adapter and connected directly to the docking station which resolved the issue.

So if you experience weird issues and suspect there's something wrong with your Targus UDS, try one of these steps first, if issues persist, call the DocKtor.
